Question: I have a lot of heart palpitations. My endocrinologist says they are not dangerous, but they really bother me. What causes these and should I see a cardiologist just to make sure?

Answer: There are many different types of palpitations. Some are a normal heart beat which is too fast and others represent an abnormal rhythm (skipped beats or a flip-flop feeling in the chest or pulse). The significance of these depends upon the type, whether there are associated symptoms, the underlying state of the person's heart and an EKG (cardiogram). It is also important to make sure that it is not caused by too much thyroid hormone replacement or results from other medications you may be taking. Consultation with a cardiologist should be discussed with your primary care physician if symptoms persist or you would like a more specialized opinion.
