It all began right after Mary, my second daughter, was born in January 2000. I thought I had post-partum depression and my doctor gave me a vitamin regimen to follow. I joined Weight Watchers for two months to take off my pregnancy weight. I was very discouraged and quit. I tried all kinds of weight loss pills and drinks. I would lose but then would gain it right back.
By March, my mother noticed all the bruises on my arms and legs and I had thick varicose veins and spider veins. She said she didn't like the way I looked. My face was getting pale and round. Finally, I went to the doctor in June for a check up. He ordered a CBC test and called me a week later saying that I had a urinary tract infection. He gave me another antibiotic.
The next month while walking my two children, I got a sharp pain in my back and my heart was racing. I thought I would die. I saw the doctor the next day and my blood pressure was 178/113. I was admitted to the hospital with a kidney infection for a week. They did an ultrasound, cat scan, and MRI. The cat scan showed the tumor on my right adrenal gland but the surgeon said it was benign and he wouldn't touch it. My doctor wanted to see if that's what was causing the high blood pressure.
He did a 24hr urinalysis and it showed that I had a carcinoid tumor. No doctor had ever heard of a carcinoid tumor on the adrenal gland. After seeing two surgeons, I was told to see an endocrinologist. Three weeks later I was diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome! I was relieved that I finally knew what it was!
