I was finally diagnosed with Cushing's due to a pituitary tumor at age 35 in 1991. From pictures, it was evident that I was exhibiting symptoms of Cushing's since 1979. My condition seemed to worsen after the birth of my daughter in 1984. Throughout this, doctor after doctor told me that my weight was MY problem. Even after my sister told me about Cushing's, when I asked my doctor about it, he just laughed and said that I was looking for an excuse for my weight problem!! My dermatologist finally listened, and sent me to an endocrinologist. I was actually very relieved when the results came back positive. The weight wasn't my fault! Since then I have had two transphenoidal surgeries, and since the tumor kept growing back, I had both of my adrenals removed in January of 1994. My weight is back to normal, and my energy is good. I do wonder if this is the end of my Cushing's as I still have the tumor. Which is the better treatment for Nelson's syndrome after a bilateral adrenalectomy, complete removal of the pituitary or radiation? My complete story was published in the August 1995 issue of Women's World.
