I am a 49 year old white female and employed as a technician at a local hospital near were I live. I was gaining weight anywhere from 145 to 187 pounds about three times a year and then returning to my normal weight. I was told from 1991 to 1993 to diet and that my weight gain was due to menopause and stress. In July of 1993 I was bigger than ever, sweating all the time and feeling like I was going to explode due to my weight. I couldn't take the pressure my body was going through, so I ended up being admitted to the hospital where I worked.
I worked with a cardiologist for over 10 years and he had a good idea I was cushingoid. He tested my cortisol blood level and it was very high. My endocrinologist followed me for a period of time and then referred me to another endocrinologist for his opinion because of my cycles three times a year. He sent me to the University of Virginia for transsphenoidal surgery. Dr. Edward Laws performed the surgery in March 1995. The microadenoma was difficult to pinpoint so he removed most of the pituitary gland, leaving a tiny piece which was stuck and could not be removed. I was to be a candidate for the Gamma Knife radiosurgery at UVA. My cortisol 24 hour urine started running on high again, so in December 1995, I had the Gamma Knife procedure which takes from 6 months to 18 months to show improvement. Every month I have urine collections and testing. I am down to my normal weight since about a year after surgery. The weight came off fast and everyone was amazed.
