I am 43 years old. I was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease in July 1998 after two years of complete misery. My symptoms were so totally unrelated that my OB-GYN thought I was crazy. My number one obvious symptom was uncontrollable blood pressure and weight gain. My doctor recommended a weight loss program and blood pressure medicine. Blood pressure medicine didn't control it.
I went to the doctor every two weeks and tried several different medications. I was becoming extremely tired. My face was moon-shaped, my abdomen swollen, and my knees were giving way on me. My bone loss affected my teeth. I lost five. My headaches became worse and my face was hot to the touch. Activan was prescribed for "my nerves". My friend, a pharmacist, asked me if I was taking cortisone. He thought I could have Cushing's. I was connected with a wonderful internist who diagnosed me. I traveled to the Medical Center in Houston where an adenoma was revealed on my pituitary gland. My gland was removed. I thought my life would immediately improve. This didn't happen. It has been almost a year since surgery. The doctors say that I'm going through "fine tuning". The steroid withdrawals were so awful.
I have to fight fatigue and depression and coping with limitations. My family has been wonderful.....they are my inspiration. Cushing's friends have also helped. I would appreciate any encouragement and I would be happy to talk with anyone. |
